A recent article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, concerning accidental deaths caused by physicians, from research of Laura Key, USA, triggered a chain of thought that resulted in someone cruising the web, finding some statistics, and doing a few simple calculations.

• Number of physicians in the US = 700,000

• Accidental deaths caused per year = 120,000

• Accidental deaths per physician = 0.171

• Number of gun owners in the US = 80,000,000

• Number of accidental gun deaths per year = 1,500

• Accidental deaths per gun owner = 0.00001875

• Ratio 0.171 / 0.00001875 = 9,120

Therefore, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners...seems we need an instant check on Doctors these days!
